There are some builds that are “better” (or more optimized) than mahjongways pg soft others, but generally speaking, it’s easy to build your character based on your preferences rather than what you assume the game wants you to do. Some paths are more difficult than others, but even the act of getting there against overwhelming odds can be fun in and of itself. The first happened when I unlocked the door to one of the game’s first bosses. Excited by my progress, I ran down a stairwell to a nearby shortcut, took a wrong turn, and fell to my death.
Combat is grounded and brutal, where enemies can and will fight unfairly with glee. The sense of accomplishment from finally beating a challenging foe or discovering a hidden area is immense. The blocky, near-textureless foes from the original become nightmarish abominations straight out of The Thing. The armor of fallen knights glints and shines in the sunlight as you traverse blood-spattered streets. I only ever encountered one spot where the framerate felt unstable, and it was on a bridge filled to the brim with enemies and explosions. Otherwise, the entire game can play out silky smooth, which makes the gameplay so enjoyable.

If you find yourself bashing your head against a boss, there’s probably a clever trick to beating it. To make being in soul form a little easier, there’s an item called the Cling Ring. It will give you a max HP boost, but at the cost of eating up one of your ring slots. You’ll find the Cling Ring early on in Boletarian Palace, in between the two portcullises at the bottom of a stairwell, just to the left of the very large main gate you see when you load into the Gates of Boletaria. After (most likely) dying at the hands of Vanguard, you will lose your “body form” and awaken in “soul form.” You’ll do so with half the health points you have in body form, which obviously makes things difficult. Well, aside from its historical significance, there are many fans who consider Demon’s Souls to be FromSoftware’s best game.

It also leads to a game that isn’t as refined or smoothly-functioning as some of its contemporaries, making for an experience that can feel quite dated… That is, unless the player decides to try out the remake instead. The minor gameplay adjustments and the massive graphical overhaul is enough to make the game feel that much more modern and easy to get into. A remake of Demon’s Souls, developed by Bluepoint Games, was announced in June 2020. It was rebuilt “from the ground up” and released among the launch titles of the PlayStation 5.
The game’s music has been re-recorded and is richly textured and gorgeous. Voice acting has been similarly redone, which changes the mood in certain cases. I loved the contempt of one blacksmith’s dialogue in the original Demon’s Souls, for example, but he now sounds less harsh.

This build uses the Ring of Great Strength and Cling Ring with Short Spear and Large Brushwood Shield as primary weapon and defense, while Silver Catalyst and Heavy Crossbow are the equipment in the secondary slot. Like the above loadout, this build also uses dual-handed weapons, Kilij and Rune Shield as primary and Insanity Catalyst and Kris Blade as secondary. Moreover, the rings used are Ring of Magical Sharpness and Cling Ring.
